Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scripps Ranch Pop Warner the same as Mira Mesa Youth Football?

No. Scripps Ranch Pop Warner is a completely separate organization from Mira Mesa Youth Football. Mira Mesa Youth Football is based in Mira Mesa, they practice in Mira Mesa and play their home games at Mira Mesa High School. Scripps Ranch Pop Warner is based here in Scripps Ranch, all practices are held in Scripps Ranch and all home games are played at Scripps Ranch High School. One of the biggest differences this year is that Youth football will be going to unlimited weight in all divisions and SR Pop Warner will continue to have weight limits. We feel that it is a much safer environment for children to play football against players of similar age and weights. Also, Pop Warner associations are not allowed to play or scrimmage Youth football teams because of the difference in their weight policies.

Mira Mesa’s zip codes are part of the boundaries for Scripps Ranch Pop Warner so any family that would like to play Pop Warner football in Scripps Ranch is welcome.

How many players are there on a team?

Teams consist of up to 35 players. A second team is not started until the first team has reached 35 players. We need at least 20 players to have a second team. Once we have rostered 35 players to a team, we will then start a waiting list for the second team. If players drop out or move to a different division, then players are moved from the waiting list to the rostered list. ROSTERS ARE NOT OFFICIALLY COMPLETE UNTIL FINAL WEIGH-INS AT THE END OF AUGUST

When does the 2011 season start?

Start Date: August 1st. The season starts with a two week, mandatory conditioning (20-hours) and players will not be able to hit in practice until they have completed the first 10 hours of conditioning. Please try to schedule family vacations prior to this date and we strongly recommend that your son begin to prepare for this at least one month prior to the start date.

How many games are played during the season?

Tackle teams play one preseason and nine regular season games. This completes the season. Teams that make it into the playoffs will continue until they lose their playoff game and then they continue until they have played 10 games (teams continue to play consolation games if they don’t make the playoffs or once they have lost a playoff game). Teams also have the option to continue on with invitationals and tournaments if they choose once their season has ended.

Flag teams play one preseason game and seven regular season games. They do not keep score and they do not have playoffs, but they do have a Flag Festival at the end of the season.

Jr. Mitey Mite play one preseason game, eight regular games and end with a Chocolate Chip Bowl at the end of their season.

Mitey Mite teams play one preseason, eight regular games and conclude with a Chocolate Bowl at the end of their season.

Cheer squads follow their football teams schedules.

Where are some away games played?

We are part of Palomar Conference and we will play many teams north of Scripps Ranch, including Poway, RB, PQ, Escondido, Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon and Oceanside. We also travel to other locations such as Valley Center, Ramona, Fallbrook, Temecula and Murrieta, so families should be prepared to travel to away games on certain Saturdays. Please visit the Palomar Pop Warner Conference website for more info on what other associations we compete against.

Are all games played on the weekends?

Yes. All the games are played on Saturdays. We normally have 5 home games and 5 away games but that can change depending on schedules. All Flag games are played at neutral field locations and usually only have one or two home games during a season.

Can I register my child even if my child is not present at time of registration?

Yes.  All players must register online prior to attending sign-ups. We prefer that players attend registration so they can be fitted for equipment and uniforms at sign-ups. We also need to weigh players to verify that they are signed up in the correct division. However, parents may sign their player up without them being present if they can then bring them to a future sign-up to be fitted for equipment and uniforms.

Can I get a refund if my child drops out of football or cheer?

Participants who drop out prior to the start of conditioning will receive a full refund after their equipment is returned and deemed to be in good condition. If a player drops at any time during the two weeks of conditioning, they will receive a 50% refund. After conditioning is over (August 13th), there are no refunds. Players or cheerleaders who drop must notify their team or squad's head coach and business manager immediately.

Why is Pop Warner so expensive?

Expense is relative. Compared to most recreational sports there is significantly more participation time and equipment provided to the participant. Tackle football athletes and cheerleaders are supervised in SRPW programs for almost 700 hours of practice and game time during a regular season. Your registration fees contribute to the following costs: fees for use of the schools, fields, and parks for practices and games, game day custodians, referees, field lights, snack bar staffing, uniforms, Palomar Conference fees, game day onsite EMTs, picture package, insurance, cheer accessories, cheer competition, cheer camps, equipment reconditioning, and new equipment purchases. Every coach and board member in SRPW is a volunteer and without our additional fundraising efforts, we would lose money on each participant who signs up for SRPW.
